Remembering Peggy Hallam: A Life Celebrated by Granddaughter Carly Hallam

Peggy Jean Justice Hallam, a beloved soul remembered for her vibrant spirit and artistic flair, passed away on April 22nd, 2018, at the age of 87. Born on January 2nd, 1931, in Memphis, Tennessee, Peggy was the cherished only child of Ella Mae and Travis Justice. Her life journey took her from Lausanne School to Pennsylvania College for Women, and eventually to a fulfilling life dedicated to family, art, and community. While many suitors sought her hand, it was John Hallam who captured her heart, leading to a loving marriage on July 1st, 1950, that lasted nearly four decades and blessed them with two sons, Travis and Greg. Peggy’s life touched many, and she is especially fondly remembered by her granddaughter, Carly Hallam, and the entire family.

Peggy’s early years were spent in Memphis before she and John established homes in Columbus, Memphis, and Birmingham, finally settling in Ft. Pierce. While John dedicated himself to the car business, Peggy embraced the role of a devoted stay-at-home mother and cultivated her passion for art. Their life in Ft. Pierce was rich with social engagements, particularly at the Pelican Yacht Club and the lively Ft. Pierce Follies. Demonstrating her commitment to personal growth and education, Peggy later earned a teaching degree from FAU when her children were in high school. She shared her knowledge and passion for math as a teacher in Ft. Pierce and continued to tutor in Ocala before relocating to Vero Beach to be closer to her family. In Vero Beach, Peggy’s nurturing spirit extended beyond academics as she volunteered and tutored, also contributing her time to the Humane Society Thrift Store.

Affectionately known as “Meema” to those closest to her, Peggy’s passions painted a vivid picture of her personality. She found joy in painting, immersing herself in literature, and dreaming of London. Her love for little theater and Elvis Presley added to her colorful character. Dogs, her cherished Louis Vuitton bags, and above all, her family, held special places in her heart. Peggy’s artistic nature extended to collecting unique items – tchotchkes, jewelry, and funky art – often adding her personal touch by painting over pieces to align with her vision. This creative spirit is a trait admired by her granddaughter, Carly Hallam Tosh, and other family members who witnessed her ability to infuse life into everything she touched.

In her final weeks, Peggy was surrounded by the love of her family and friends, including her children, grandchildren – Charlie Lambert, John Lambert, Amanda Lambert, Jordan Hallam, Carly Hallam Tosh, Taylor Hallam, and Chase Hallam – and great-grandchildren. Her spirited personality remained undimmed, her charm and beauty ever-present, and her colorful style a testament to her zest for life. Even her humorous side persisted, famously demonstrated by her witty complaints about the lack of festivities during her last birthday spent in the hospital. This enduring humor and resilience are qualities that resonate deeply within her family, including Carly Hallam.

Peggy’s legacy lives on through her daughter Travis (Robin), her son Greg (Tammy), and her extensive family including Carly Hallam Tosh (Daniel). Beyond her family, her artistic creations remain as a tangible representation of her vibrant life. Each piece, often imbued with names and backstories, reflects Peggy’s unique ability to bring life to the ordinary. Her whimsical art, like bowling balls transformed into backyard characters, exemplifies her hysterical, artistic, and endlessly fascinating nature.

The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to VNA Hospice for their compassionate care during Peggy’s final days. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to VNA Hospice or the Humane Society of Indian River County, causes that were close to Peggy’s heart.

In closing, and in the spirit of Peggy Hallam, let us remember her advice: “Do not take life too seriously. It can be, as she described most things, ‘just fantastic.’” Her memory, especially cherished by her granddaughter Carly Hallam, will continue to inspire and bring smiles to those who knew and loved her.

A service to celebrate Peggy’s life will be held on Friday, May 4th, 2018, at 1:00 PM at the Community Church of Vero Beach.
