EARLY HEAD START COLLABORATIVE FOR ENHANCED CHILD DEVELOPMENT

In collaboration with Atonement Child Care Center and Family Based Child Care, The Salvation Army’s Early Head Start program extends its reach to nearly one hundred infants, toddlers, and their families. This collaborative day care initiative ensures that every child receives enriching Early Head Start services until they turn three years old, while attending a licensed day care center or family care provider in New York State. Upon reaching age three, children seamlessly transition to Head Start and/or Universal Pre-Kindergarten programs. This collaborative approach includes comprehensive enrichment services:

  • Enhanced Child Development Interventions: Specialized programs to support each child’s developmental progress within the day care setting.
  • Specialized Caregivers: Dedicated and trained caregivers who understand the unique needs of infants and toddlers in day care.
  • Family Support Services: Practical assistance for families, including resources for diapers and formula, ensuring basic needs are met.
  • Parent Education and Training: Workshops and resources to empower parents with knowledge and skills to support their child’s development at home and in day care.
  • Health and Nutrition Screenings: Regular health and nutrition screenings to monitor children’s well-being and support healthy development from the earliest age in day care.

EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS TO ADVANCE EARLY LEARNING

The Salvation Army is proud to partner with numerous organizations in Central New York to champion early learning and literacy. Our day care centers actively participate in initiatives like the National Grade Level Reading Campaign, striving to ensure all children achieve grade-level reading proficiency by the third grade. We are also engaged with the Early Education Alliance and The Literacy Coalition, supporting programs like Dolly Parton’s “Imagination Library,” which provides children with a new book each month, fostering a love of reading from a young age through day care and home.

Our collaboration with the Syracuse City School District brings enriched Universal Pre-Kindergarten instruction to four-year-olds at our Cab Horse Commons Child Care Center. Furthermore, Cab Horse Commons offers Head Start programming for three and four-year-olds through a partnership with PEACE, Inc., creating a comprehensive early learning environment within our day care center.

THE PROFOUND BENEFITS OF EARLY HEAD START AND QUALITY DAY CARE

Early childhood education is widely recognized as the cornerstone of a child’s overall development. Social and emotional skills, crucial for future success, are nurtured and strengthened from a very young age through play and interactions in day care and early learning environments. Research highlights that a remarkable 90% of brain development occurs by the age of 3. Children who benefit from access to health resources and early learning opportunities, such as those provided in quality day care centers, demonstrate essential school readiness skills by age 5. Our programs are designed to foster secure attachments between children, their peers, and adults, creating a supportive and enriching day care experience.

Infants and toddlers in our Day Care Facilities and the Early Head Start program receive exceptional care within a nurturing learning environment designed for both children and families. Our dedicated teachers are committed to supporting each child’s developmental journey, utilizing assessments and individualized planning to help them reach key milestones. The continuity of care offered through our day care facilities ensures stable and consistent support for both children and families, providing a reliable foundation for growth and development. Financial assistance is available for eligible families, making quality day care accessible to those who need it most.
