Playing car games on the road can be a fantastic way to keep kids entertained, and one classic that many families love is Punch Buggy. In this game, the excitement comes from spotting a Volkswagen Beetle, or as some playfully call it, a “Buggy Car”. My daughters, Ava and Lola, are huge fans, but their enthusiasm sometimes outpaces their car identification skills! While they never miss a genuine VW Beetle, any small, roundish car – be it a Mini Cooper, Fiat 500, or even a Toyota Prius – often gets an enthusiastic shout of “Punch Buggy!”. Living in Berkeley, we see a lot of Priuses, leading to, shall we say, frequent gentle punches for me!
To bring a bit more accuracy and a little less playful pain into our Punch Buggy games, I decided to create a “Punch Buggy Field Guide” for Ava and Lola. The goal? To help them confidently identify a true Volkswagen Beetle, the quintessential “buggy car,” from the look-alikes.
A handmade Punch Buggy Field Guide designed to help children identify Volkswagen Beetles for the Punch Buggy game. |

Equipped with their new Punch Buggy Field Guide, it was time to put their car spotting skills to the test. Was our field guide going to be the key to fewer (for me!) but more accurate “punches”?
A young girl points out a silver hatchback, questioning if it is a Punch Buggy, while using the field guide. |
“Is that a Punch Buggy?” Lola asked, pointing at a passing car. The Field Guide came out, pages were consulted, and the verdict?
A classic blue Volkswagen Beetle, correctly identified as a Punch Buggy using the field guide. |
“Yes! That one’s a Punch Buggy!” Ava exclaimed, correctly identifying a classic Volkswagen Beetle. The Field Guide was working! But there were still some tricky ones to navigate.
Children examining a car closely, using their Punch Buggy guide to determine if it qualifies for the game. |
“Hmm… what about this one?” Another car appeared, prompting more consultation and careful comparison with the guide.
A silver Volkswagen Beetle is spotted and confirmed as a Punch Buggy, much to the excitement of the kids. |
“There it is! Definitely a Punch Buggy,” I confirmed, pointing out the key features highlighted in their guide – the distinctive rounded shape, the headlights, and the overall profile of the “buggy car”.
A girl joyfully shouts “Punch Buggy!” after correctly identifying a Volkswagen Beetle, ready to play the game. |
“PUNCH BUGGY!” Success! The rules were followed, the identification was accurate, and the game continued with much glee.
A playful punch in the arm as part of the Punch Buggy game, demonstrating the lighthearted fun of the activity. |
“Got you back!” Lola giggled, landing a gentle punch on my arm. Turnabout is fair play, after all!
Two children intently watching for Volkswagen Beetles, eager to spot the next Punch Buggy during their car game. |
“Watch out Mum. It’s a Punch Buggy!” Ava warned, ever vigilant in her Punch Buggy spotting duties.
A classic, older model Volkswagen Beetle, showcasing the iconic design that is central to the Punch Buggy game. |
“I think we found an old one,” I remarked, pointing to a beautifully maintained vintage Beetle.
A child expressing elation at successfully spotting a Punch Buggy, highlighting the fun of car spotting games. |
“Yes!” they cheered, happy to add another point to their Punch Buggy tally.
A Fiat dealership, a place often mistaken by children as full of Punch Buggies due to similar small car styles. |
“The girls always think they’ve hit the Punch Buggy jackpot at this Fiat dealership…” I chuckled, as we passed a lot filled with small, Fiat cars.
A line of Fiat 500 cars, clarifying that despite their resemblance, they are not Volkswagen Beetles and thus not Punch Buggies. |
“…but they’re not Punch Buggies,” I reminded them gently. The Field Guide was essential to avoid those common misidentifications.
A modern car with a rounded shape, prompting the question of whether newer cars can also be considered Punch Buggies. |
“I think this one might be a Punch Buggy,” Ava pondered, pointing at a newer, more modern-looking car with a rounded design.
A new Volkswagen Beetle, confirming that modern versions of the car still count as Punch Buggies in the game. |
“He he he… It is a Punch Buggy!” Yes, even the new Beetles count!
A car that is clearly not a Volkswagen Beetle, used as a comparison to teach children what not to identify as a Punch Buggy. |
“Oh, but this one’s not,” I clarified, pointing to a car that was distinctly not a “buggy car”. The learning (and the game) continued.

“Punch Buggy!” And with that, another round was won. Thanks to our Punch Buggy Field Guide, the number of random, inaccurate “punches” has definitely decreased. It seems our little guide has been a success in bringing more clarity – and fewer playful punches – to our family car games!
On a side note, it does raise a question: Does the new Volkswagen Beetle officially count as a “buggy car” for Punch Buggy? We’ve decided they do in our family, but I’m curious about the “official” rules, if there are any! Do you include the new Beetles in your Punch Buggy games, or do you stick to the classic, old-school Beetles? Let us know in the comments!
