When you need a physical exam, convenience and speed are often top priorities. You might be wondering, “Can Urgent Care Do Physicals?” The answer is yes! UPMC Urgent Care offers a variety of physical exams for adults and children at all of our easily accessible locations. No appointment is needed – just walk in! Our centers across Western Pennsylvania and Western Maryland are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week, making it simple to get the physical you require on your schedule.
Streamlined Scheduling for Your Physical Exam
To further enhance your convenience, UPMC Urgent Care provides the option to book your physical exam appointment online in advance. While walk-ins are always welcome, prescheduling can save you time and ensure you’re seen promptly. You can easily schedule online for various needs, including:
- Physicals (excluding DOT physicals)
- COVID-19 tests
- Treatment for illnesses and injuries
- Flu vaccines (for individuals aged 4 and older)
- COVID-19 vaccines (for those aged 12 and older, available in Fall 2024)
For those who are already part of the UPMC network, MyUPMC users can schedule directly through the patient portal, simplifying the process even further. Whether you choose to schedule ahead or walk in, UPMC Urgent Care is committed to delivering high-quality, efficient care to every patient.
Maximizing Your Urgent Care Physical Exam Visit
To ensure your visit is as smooth and efficient as possible, keep these helpful tips in mind, whether you preschedule your physical or walk in:
- Prescheduled appointments are available during specific hours throughout the week.
- Please avoid booking multiple appointments on the same day for the same person and condition to allow fair access for all patients.
- Only one prescheduled appointment time will be honored per patient per day.
- Patients with prescheduled appointments will be seen as close to their appointment time as possible, regardless of arrival time. Arriving early won’t necessarily speed up your care.
- Arriving significantly late for a prescheduled appointment might result in your visit being treated as a walk-in.
- Walk-in patients are welcome anytime during our operating hours.
- Walk-in patients are generally seen in the order of arrival. However, patients with more urgent medical needs may be prioritized.
- Online prescheduling is currently not available at UPMC Urgent Care locations in central Pennsylvania and western Maryland; however, walk-ins are always welcome.
Types of Physical Exams Available at Urgent Care
At UPMC Urgent Care, our team of board-certified physicians, physician assistants, and CRNPs are qualified to perform a range of physical exams. To make your visit even easier, please remember to bring any required forms with you. We commonly perform the following types of physicals:
- Sports Physicals: Ensuring athletes of all ages are fit to participate in sports.
- Driver’s License Physicals: Confirming you meet the health requirements for driving (excluding Commercial Driver’s Licenses).
- Camp Physicals: Meeting the health requirements for children and teens attending summer camps.
- Work Physicals*: Providing basic physical assessments for employment purposes.
*Please note that we currently offer basic work physicals only. UPMC Urgent Care does not conduct urine drug screenings, breath alcohol testing, functional capacity or physical ability tests, or other specialized employment-related testing.
Understanding Physical Exams Not Offered at Urgent Care
While urgent care centers are excellent for immediate physical exam needs, it’s important to understand the limitations. UPMC Urgent Care does not provide annual check-ups or wellness exams. These comprehensive preventive care visits should be scheduled with your primary care physician (PCP). For ongoing health management and yearly wellness checks, your PCP is your best resource.
Additionally, UPMC Urgent Care does not perform Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exams for Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL). These specialized physicals require specific certifications and are not within the scope of urgent care services.
