Understanding Car Registration Fees in Texas

Registering your Car In Texas involves understanding various fees that contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the state’s infrastructure and services. This guide breaks down the different components of car registration fees in Texas, ensuring you’re fully informed when it’s time to register or renew your vehicle.

Base Registration Fees for Cars and Trucks

The foundation of your vehicle registration cost is the base registration fee, which varies depending on the type and weight of your vehicle.

For standard cars and lighter pickup trucks, the base registration fee is $50.75. This fee applies to most passenger cars you see on Texas roads.

If you own a heavier pickup truck, specifically those weighing between 6,001 and 10,000 pounds, the base registration fee is slightly higher at $54. This reflects the increased road impact of heavier vehicles.

For heavy vehicles, including heavy-duty pickup trucks, motor homes, and commercial trucks, registration fees are categorized into seven weight classes, ranging from 6,001 pounds up to 80,000 pounds. The fees for these vehicles increase with weight, acknowledging their greater contribution to road wear and tear.

Fees for Other Vehicle Types

Beyond cars and trucks, Texas has specific registration fees for other vehicle types:

Trailers, including travel trailers, incur a registration fee of $45 for trailers weighing up to 6,000 pounds. This fee ensures that towed vehicles also contribute to road maintenance.

Mopeds and motorcycles have a lower base registration fee of $30. This reduced fee acknowledges their lighter weight and different usage patterns compared to cars and trucks.

Electric vehicles (EVs) in Texas are subject to an additional annual fee. Fully electric cars and trucks weighing 10,000 lbs. or less are assessed a $200 annual fee upon registration renewal, starting September 1, 2023. New EVs issued two-year registrations will be charged $400. This fee is in addition to all standard vehicle registration and related fees and helps to ensure that EV owners also contribute to road funding, similar to fuel taxes paid by gasoline car owners.

It’s important to note that hybrid vehicles and those with combination fuel types are not subject to the electric vehicle fee. Motorcycles, mopeds, autocycles, and neighborhood electric vehicles are also exempt. Governmental vehicles and vehicles with Disabled Veteran or meritorious military license plates are also not assessed this additional fee.
