The core mission to elevate the standards and results of Patient Care is deeply rooted in the vision of our co-founder, Betty Irene Moore. Inspired by her personal experiences within the healthcare system, both as a patient and as a caregiver for hospitalized family members, Betty Moore recognized a significant opportunity to enhance the quality and safety of healthcare services, particularly within the San Francisco Bay Area. This vision sparked a dedicated endeavor spanning over a decade, the Betty Irene Moore Nursing Initiative, which empowered bedside nurses to spearhead improvement projects. These initiatives demonstrably reshaped how hospitals deliver care across the San Francisco Bay Area and the broader Sacramento region. We honor this impactful legacy by continuing to invest in the education and development of nurses through the esteemed Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at the University of California, Davis, and the vital Family Caregiving Institute.
Championing Patient Safety and Diagnostic Accuracy
Patient safety and the consistent delivery of high-quality care remain central pillars of our ongoing efforts. Notably, our Diagnostic Excellence Initiative addresses a critical area that, despite its profound impact, has historically received less attention and funding than warranted. Through this initiative, we are proactively working to minimize diagnostic errors and delays, streamline the diagnostic process to reduce unnecessary costs and redundancies, ultimately improve patient health outcomes, and save lives. Our approach involves fostering the development and validation of innovative metrics for evaluating diagnostic performance, cultivating specialized expertise within the diagnostic field, and leveraging the potential of new and emerging technologies to enhance diagnostic capabilities. Currently, a significant limitation within healthcare systems is the lack of systematic, real-time measurement of diagnostic performance. This deficiency hinders the ability to effectively quantify performance levels and implement targeted improvements in diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.
Broadening the Scope of Patient-Centered Initiatives
We have recently concluded a series of impactful activities focused on enhancing the care for individuals facing serious illnesses – specifically, those managing multiple chronic conditions and experiencing limitations in their ability to perform routine daily activities. Furthermore, we have actively supported initiatives aimed at bolstering medication safety protocols and have empowered early-career researchers to meaningfully engage patients and their families in their healthcare journey. These efforts, alongside other specialized projects, collectively contribute to our overarching goal of continually enhancing both the experience and the tangible outcomes of patient care.
