Accessing Quality Health Care Services: Your Guide to IHS Facilities

IMPORTANT: In case of a health emergency, immediately DIAL 911.

It’s crucial to understand that if you seek medical services from a provider outside the Indian Health Service (IHS) network, you may be personally responsible for covering the expenses. Additionally, transportation costs to and from any healthcare facility, whether by personal vehicle or ambulance, could also be your financial responsibility.

Before visiting any health facility, it is strongly advised to call ahead and confirm that they can provide the specific services you require. To assist you in finding the nearest care options, the Indian Health Service offers a comprehensive facility locator map. This invaluable tool helps you identify Indian Health Service, Tribal, or Urban Indian Health Program facilities in your vicinity.

This user-friendly map provides several ways to locate health care services:

  • General Location Search: Zoom in on the map to a general area to explore the presence of health facilities within that region. This is helpful if you are planning travel or relocating and need to understand the health care landscape.
  • “My Location” Feature: By clicking “My Location” and entering your current address (at minimum a zip code or a city and state combination), the map identifies the closest available facilities. This function defaults to a “Facility Information” search if insufficient location details are provided.
  • Specific Facility Search: If you are looking for a particular health facility, navigate to the “Facility Information” tab and type in the facility’s name. This is the quickest way to find information if you already know the name of the health care provider you are interested in.
  • Grouped Facility Search: To view all facilities belonging to a specific group (e.g., all Tribal health programs), go to the “Facility Information” tab, click “advanced,” select the checkbox(es) for your desired group(s), and then click “Search.” This is useful for understanding the range of health care options within a particular category.

Should you encounter difficulties in locating services through the IHS locator, the HRSA Health Center locator is an alternative resource.
