About the Career Readiness Initiative

Development and Validation of the NACE Career Readiness Competencies

NACE initiated its Career Readiness Initiative in 2015 to address a crucial need for both new college graduates and the professionals guiding their career development and recruitment: establishing a shared understanding of the essential elements for launching and progressing in a successful career. This initiative aimed to create a common language for discussing needs and expectations and to define a foundational set of competencies upon which a fulfilling career can be built.

The initial task force, comprising NACE members from career services and university relations/recruiting, developed the career readiness definition and associated competencies. These were subsequently reviewed and updated in 2017 by a member task force, incorporating feedback from professionals utilizing these competencies with students.

Furthermore, following the initial launch, NACE undertook efforts to identify specific behaviors linked to each competency, partnering with SkillSurvey to validate these behavioral indicators.

In 2020, a member task force was convened to review and revise the competencies as necessary, while NACE and SkillSurvey finalized a critical phase of their validation process to pinpoint sample behaviors. As part of this process, the task force formulated recommendations for revisions and presented them to the NACE membership for feedback. Over 300 members contributed recommendations and comments, shaping the revised competencies to reflect valuable member insights and practical applications.
